I have you now, and I wonât let go.
âLet GO,â she hissed again, through clenched teeth. The Watcher looked up to see the Afterling, grabbing her own braid with both small gloved hands, pulling it like a rope. He noticed with a start that she was wearing fingerless gloves. Was there a communications ring under there? He saw a ridge on the left ring finger⦠a Ring?
Impossible. There would be time to find out later.
He reached up and felt the tail end of her braid, wrapped with a leather thong. Rummaging in his jeans pocket, he pulled out the pearl handled pen knife. Flicking it open, he laid the braid flat to the trunk, then drove the blade of the knife up to the hilt, through the leather-wrapped end of her braid and deep into the tree trunk. Arms wrapped around the tree branch, she could not let go or she would risk falling, and she could not touch the knife to pull it free of the trunk. Head down, braid pegged just beyond reach and clinging to the branch, she was trapped.
Still holding on to the thick braid, he unwrapped his legs from the trunk, grabbed a stout branch and pulled up with his free hand. He turned. Now, the Watcher stood in the fork of the tree, almost eye to eye with the Afterling.
He smiled and tipped his hat.
A whispered stream of perfect invectives poured forth from her lips. One fist flying, thrashing at him, she was reaching with the other for her revolver. The Watcher grabbed one wrist, then the other, securing them fast in his one hand.
The Afterling is a mini-human.
Proportionately hourglass shaped, she had a small waist, with large breasts and hips, not long limbed but compact and tightly woundâshe was fast, strong, and built for torque. One hand came free, and she struck him hard, nearly knocking his hat from his head. He braced his legs against the fork of the trunk and grabbed both tiny fists, putting them back together, this time to hold them tighter. She was now cursing in earnest under her breath. She glared ferociously at him, black ringlets frizzing, and the Watcher wondered if sparks would fly from her fur next. He took both hands, brought them behind her, and with one hand, pinned again, this time behind her back. She growled and wriggled but could not break free. Abruptly, she relaxed under his grip, perhaps realizing it was useless to struggle against him.
For the first time, the Watcher could clearly see the Afterlingâs face, not quite beautiful and more elfin. Her large, wide-set black eyes, and dark arched eyebrows gave her a racially indefinable lookâalmost Creole but for the otherworldly, intense golden-yellow of her skin. A smattering of tiny freckles dusted the top of her nose, adding a whimsical charm. Black hip-length ringlets framed a heart-shaped face, her rough-chopped bangs hiding the healing purple-green bruise- gash on her forehead. She was definitely angry, the dainty snarling mouth filled with white teeth.
